Ever since Drive to Survive became a Netflix favorite, Formula One fans have been waiting for the world’s biggest streaming service to produce more driving content. And, now it seems they have their wish.

Last week the entertainment giant dropped their first trailer for the mini-series Senna, which will detail the short but eventful life of the iconic Brazillian racer.

If you’re excited about seeing this incredible life brought to the small screen, or you got hooked on Drive to Survive and want to learn more about the man who is widely considered to be the best driver of all time, then read on to find out all about Senna, including its cast, release date, and more!

Who was Ayrton Senna?

Ayrton Senna da Silva was a world famous racing driver from Brazil who won three Formula One World Drivers’ Championships. His victories came in 1988, 1990, and 1991. He also won 41 Grands Prix and was in pole 65 times, the latter of which was a record he held until 2006.

Senna was known for his prodigious talent and fast speeds, as well as butting heads with the big wigs in F1 and his famous rivalry with Alain Prost, who Senna claimed received favorable treatment for being French. Like many famous racers, he began his career in karting, before working his way up the racing ladder and finally signing for the F1 team Toleman-Hart in 1984 at just 24. His career really took off when he joined Prost at McLaren-Honda, leading to the first of his world championships.

Senna was incredibly famous for his wet weather performances, as well as having a number of famous collisions with Prost. Their near violent hatred of each other, plus these on-track incidents, enhanced one of F1’s spiciest rivalries.

Sadly, Senna eventually lost his life in an accident in Italy in 1994, during a race. The aftermath of his fatal crash led to a wealth of safety reforms in the sport, and he has since been solidified as a Brazillian sporting legend in a way that only Pele can match. Prost, his onetime rival, was intimately involved in a number of projects that sought to conserve his legacy.

What will Senna be about?

Gabriel Leone in 'Senna'

The six-episode mini-series will dive into Senna’s career and personal relationships. It will begin in his early twenties, when he moved to England to compete, and will follow the ups and downs of his career until his fatal accident.

Although the audience will be missing out on Senna’s early life, it’s fair to say that the most exciting narratives are from this time in the driver’s life. He grew up relatively privileged in Brazil and, while he undoubtedly suffered trials and setbacks as a youth, it was only when he was placed on the global stage that his truly astounding nature began to shine through.

The series will cover a lot of great ground, notably his famous feud with Prost, but will also undoubtedly show off his genius. Senna was well known for being in tune with his cars and being able to pick up on minute details other drivers might miss.

Senna was also highly religious, and saw driving not only as his vocation, but a way for him to make sense of the universe. This type of profundity is likely to make its way into the series too.

The show is set to be in a mixture of English and Portuguese, but as a Netflix production, will undoubtedly have plenty of different language options for both dubbing and subtitles.

Is there a Senna Netflix release date?

For now, Netflix has only given late 2024 as a release date for Senna. We expect there will be more information as the premiere date edges closer.

Who will be in Senna?

Gabriel Leone in 'Senna'

Senna will be played by Gabriel Leone, who recently starred in Ferrari, which also takes place in the high octane world of Formula One. Brazillian Pâmela Tomé will play his TV star girlfriend, Xuxa, and his French rival Alain Prost will be portrayed by Matt Mella. Ron Dennis, the head of the McLaren racing team and one of the most important people in the Senna story will be played by Patrick Kennedy (Downton Abbey). Brit Kaya Scodelario (Skins, The Maze Runner) is also set to appear.

The series was created with the help of Senna’s family.

When does ‘Tires’ release on Netflix? https://wegotthiscovered.com/netflix/when-does-tires-release-on-netflix/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/netflix/when-does-tires-release-on-netflix/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 17:37:17 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691866 The incoming comedy may be Shane Gillis' last shot at widespread fame.]]>

Netflix is prepped to launch the career of comedian Shane Gillis even further with the release of the 36-year-old’s own dedicated series, Tires.

He’s no unknown, by any means, but Gillis is prepped to reach a far wider audience with the release of his fresh Netflix comedy. Shows following rising comedians are extremely common, but broad success is less guaranteed. Funnymen from Jerry Seinfeld to John Mulaney have earned series of their own, but few have managed to reach the heights of the genre’s most successful.

Gillis is now getting his shot at competing with the likes of Seinfeld with Tires, a series that follows Gillis, alongside fellow comedian Steven Gerben, in a story that shares a mild resemblance with Hulu’s award-winning The Bear. Gerben plays Will, the sweet but anxious heir to a struggling auto repair chain, as he works to keep the business afloat even past the interference of his combative cousin and employee, Shane (played by Gillis).

Based on Gillis’ popularity as a comedian, which is still fresh but mounting every day, the show has a great shot at landing with audiences. His first Netflix stand up special, Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs debuted back in 2023 to excellent reviews, and with Gillis so intertwined with Tires — a series based on his own YouTube pilot — its all but guaranteed to appeal to the comedian’s rapidly-growing fanbase.

When can I watch Tires on Netflix?

The wait for Gillis’ latest project is almost over. Following the show’s announcement back in early 2024, hype for the release has been gradually building. It’s now close to boiling over, as fans prep themselves for Tires‘ May 23 release.

Gillis has hit several snags over the course of his career as a comedian, largely due to controversial statements made in his longstanding podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast. Some of those statements even led to Gillis’ firing from a spot on SNL just days after he was added as a cast member. Gillis maintains that clips blasted as racist or bigoted were taken out of context, and asserts that, as a comedian, pushing boundaries comes with the territory, but he’s yet to properly reclaim the budding fame he was eyeing back in 2019.

Tires could change that. The incoming release may just be Gillis’ final shot at reaching comedy’s elusive heights, and at proving to viewers that he’s not a problematic comedian. The comedy series will release all six episodes at once, allowing audiences to make up their minds on Gillis once and for all.

Why was Percy Hynes White dropped from season 2 of ‘Wednesday?’ https://wegotthiscovered.com/netflix/why-was-percy-hynes-white-dropped-from-season-2-of-wednesday/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/netflix/why-was-percy-hynes-white-dropped-from-season-2-of-wednesday/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 16:56:17 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691879 It looks like Wednesday will have to find a new love interest.]]>

Netflix’s series Wednesday is full of twists and red herrings during its first season, but the show’s mysteries weren’t just relegated to on-screen drama.

Inspired by the Charles Addams comic of America’s First Goth family, Wednesday follows the titular character, played by Jenna Ortega, as she attends a spooky private school called Nevermore. In a school full of outcasts, Wednesday Addams tries to remain a maverick, which is easier said than done — especially regarding her love life.

While the series has many enjoyable aspects, throwing Wednesday in the middle of a love triangle was one of the more confounding. By the looks of it, however, said love triangle will not be continuing in the show’s sophomore season, as Percy Hynes White ⏤ the actor who played Wednesday’s schoolmate Xavier ⏤ has been officially dropped from the cast following a disturbing controversy.

What were the claims against Percy Hynes White?

In 2023, Variety reported that an anonymous Twitter user had claimed White assaulted them at a house party. They alleged that White and his friends would ply minors with alcohol to assault them. The outlet did not reveal the alleged victim’s identity, but posted their claims at length.

“He would pursue, have sex with, abuse and get my friend high who was 13/14 at the time. Last time I knew they had sex she was 16 and he was 20. He assaulted me at one of those parties awhile I was too drunk, and he had cornered and pressured and assaulted multiple of my friends.”

The tweet has since been deleted, but consequences soon followed. Others supported these claims and contributed additional corroborative stories. At the time, no further action was taken, but White maintained his innocence.

White’s response to the allegations

White later took to Instagram and denied the poster’s claims. He explained that he had never met this person and that his friends and family had been targeted due to these allegations. The Gifted actor further described how he was affected following the events.

“Underage photos of me were used, and examples of me acting in character were presented as hateful. My friend Jane was falsely portrayed as a victim, and her attempts to set the record straight have been ignored. She gave me permission to include her in this message. The rumors are false. I can’t accept the portrayal of me as someone bigoted, or criminally negligent of people’s safety. These are the kind of baseless, harmful claims that can create mistrust toward victims. It’s very distressing to know that this misinformation has upset people. I’m really thankful for everyone who’s stood by me and helped share the facts. Harassment of my family, friends and coworkers needs to stop please. Thank you for taking the time to read this.”

At the time this news broke, Wednesday season 2 had yet to go into production. However, there were rumblings that White would not reprise his role as Xavier in the upcoming season as a result of the claims made against him. At the time, there had been no confirmation of official action taken, but fan outcry made the ultimate result somewhat inevitable. With such public allegations of such a brutal nature, White quickly lost stock as a romantic interest for Wednesday’s character.

As of May 2024, Variety confirmed that White won’t be returning for season 2 when it released a full cast announcement. 12 additional cast members have joined season 2, with White conspicuously being left off the list. Other cast members to be added to the official list are Steve Buscemi, Thandiwe Newton, Christopher Lloyd, and Haley Joel Osment.

There is no current news about what season 2 has in store for the multitude of Wednesday fans out there, but it’s fair to surmise that the storyline of the upcoming show will boast an ambitious overhaul. Viewers will be able to see these events when Wednesday airs season 2 on Netflix.

Netflix’s mega-hit Wednesday survived the streamer’s cancelation spree in 2023 and got the green light for a second season. But the future was not bright for its characters, especially for Percy Hynes White, whose sudden fame in 2022 was steamrolled by what 2023 bought in just as the year took off.

It all started early in January 2023, when shocking allegations of sexual assault and other accusations cropped up against White. At the time — i.e., throughout 2023 — Netflix kept mum, refusing to confirm if the alarming claims have cost the actor his role as Xavier Thorpe in the hit series. But now that the series has officially begun shooting, the streamer has shared its big list of returning and new actors for the show.

What are the allegations against Percy Hynes White?

The said allegations, made by multiple women including @milkievich who shared them on Twitter, reveal some very disturbing details about incidents initiated by and involving White when he was a high schooler in Toronto as well as the ones that took place when he was between the ages of 17 and 20.

One of the allegations made in this thread claimed that White and his group of friends are “predators” and “manipulate girls.” They allegedly threw parties only to “explicitly invite women they thought were hot so they could get them drunk and high enough to have sex with them.” White has also been accused of assaulting multiple women, calling them names, sharing their nude pictures online without consent, and targeting minors.

Many other women have also accused the Wednesday star of sexually assaulting them and even aiding a rapist.

The thread also claims that a deleted account by the name of @impercenator was actually White’s page on Twitter via which he made a string of problematic tweets.

A video of White uttering a racial slur also cropped up, further flaming the #cancelpercy campaign on Twitter.

While White didn’t respond to the accusations immediately, only disabling the comments on his Instagram page in the wake of the controversy, he did address the allegations in June 2023 and called it a “campaign of misinformation.”

“The rumors are false. I can’t accept the portrayal of me as someone bigoted, or criminally negligent of people’s safety. These are the kind of baseless, harmful claims that can create mistrust toward victims.”

But his six-month-long delay in answering the allegations did little to undo the damage as even when no fresh claims against the actor cropped up, the glaring accusations left Wednesday fans scrambling to find the answer to one big question… which has finally been answered.

Will Percy Hynes White’s Xavier Thorpe return in Wednesday season 2?

Percy Hynes White and Jenna Ortega in 'Wednesday'
Photo via Netflix

Netflix has revealed its cast members for the second season of Wednesday and Percy Hynes White is not on it. So, it is official — there will be no Xavier Thorpe the next time we see Wednesday at Nevermore, a certain long-haired individual who was upped to the status of being her next love interest (after her first love turned out to be a fictional monster) will no longer be present.

Of course, Jenna Ortega is returning — she even dropped Scream 7 for the series— and so are Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Isaac Ordonez, Joy Sunday, and many more. But clearly, as much as Netflix tried to act all nonchalant about the whole controversy, all the while decisions were being made so as to not jeopardize their show’s reputation.

It’s not like White’s supporters and fans didn’t try to stop the inevitable. Between the actor’s supporters filing a petition to ensure he doesn’t lose his projects because of the allegations and his fans ready to strike an argument with those demanding his instant removal from the show, White had a number of voices in his corner. But as 2023 progressed, ignoring whether or not he will still have a future with Netflix became harder.

Going by the explosive can of worms the original accusations kicked open and considering the fate of celebs who have faced similar allegations, guessing his most probable fate wasn’t difficult. The past few years have been eye-opening when it comes to the seemingly glittery world of celebs. Many had their problematic past and toxic attitudes out in the open for the world to see and found themselves reaping the seeds they sowed

Kevin Spacey lost out on almost all his roles after sexual allegations against him came to light in 2017. Danny Masterson, who has been facing multiple allegations of sexual assault, was fired by Netflix from The Ranch. Last we heard about Armie Hammer — after he lost all prospective projects as stomach-churning allegations against him surfaced — he was seen selling timeshare in the Cayman Islands. The latest example would be Jonathan Majors, who was swiftly removed from the MCU after he was found guilty of assaulting his girlfriend.

Of course, fans of the series already have a list of names that can replace the actor, but that part of the debate will only gain proper steam once Netflix decides to share exactly what it plans to do with the character of Xavier Thorpe.

The emotional saga of Queen of Tears has finally drawn to a close after enthralling audiences for eight weeks with its touching narrative. The finale of the show touched viewers with the heartfelt love story between Hae-In and Hyun-Woo.

Their journey through illness, marital disputes, and the trials posed by a ruthless antagonist kept viewers engrossed, solidifying their status as a beloved on-screen couple, both in their roles and in real life. The last two episodes kept viewers at the edge of their seats as we all hoped there would be a happy ending for the sweet couple. While episode 15 left us on a horrifying cliffhanger, episode 16 went out with an emotional bang.

Episode 16 recap

Fortunately, after the events of episode 15, Hyun-woo survives the near-fatal accident and leaves the hospital to find his wife, Hae-in. To speed up the search, Hyun-woo uses a clever strategy and asks Grace to inform Eun-sung’s mother, Ms. Mo, that Eun-sung has abducted Hae-in. Ms. Mo is prompted into immediate action when she learns that her son has moved secret funds to leave the country. Meanwhile, Yang-gi drives Hyun-woo, who is still struggling with pain to find Hae-in.

The narrative shifts to Eun-sung holding Hae-in captive at a hunting ground. When Eun-sung’s mother arrives, a confrontation between the two reveals shocking truths about Hae-in’s brother’s death, and Hae-in overhears it all. Hyun-woo sneaks in to rescue Hae-in and the two run into the woods to escape. However, Eun-sung sees this and immediately pursues them with a rifle in hand. Eun-sung catches up to them and threatens to shoot if Hae-in doesn’t leave with him. Hae-in defiantly refuses to go with Eun-sung, and as tensions rise, Eun-sung aims his rifle at her.

The police arrive and point their firearm at Eun-sung in hopes that it will deter him. In his rage and jealousy, he shoots at Hae-in but Hyun-woo jumps in and takes the bullet. Eun-sung is then shot to death by the police. Hyun-woo is rushed to the hospital again, stirring memories for Hae-in and bringing the Baek and Hong families closer together as they await Hyun-woo’s recovery. After Hyun-woo wakes up, both he and Hae-in express remorse for past misunderstandings.

Meanwhile, Yang-gi takes legal action against Eun-sung’s mother, leading to her eventual imprisonment with the help of incriminating evidence from Grace. Grace’s actions also prove pivotal in the family’s reconciliation and reinstatement in Queens Group. Ultimately, the Hongs regain their company’s leadership, with reconciliation among family members. Beom-seok returns as chairman, and the family replaces a spy painting with a joint family photo. The family relationships and dynamics evolve positively as time goes by. Beom-ja finds love with the farmer Oh Eun-young and takes charge of the relationship.

A bittersweet end

Hae-in and Hyun-woo return to Germany and move forward with their lives. They become parents to a beautiful baby girl. Years later, Hae-in passes away in 2074, five decades after she was told about her cancer. Hyun-woo visits her grave, later joining her in the afterlife as promised. We watch as the two walk together toward eternity in a lavender field, marking the end of their story.

Episode 15 of Queen of Tears set up the season finale brilliantly. Hae-In and Hyun-Woo’s incredible relationship was the backbone of the series, and fans ultimately rooted for the couple through thick and thin.

Right on the cusp of the series’ end, the penultimate episode of Queen of Tears was a true emotional roller coaster, as Eun-sung’s scheme becomes intensified, leading to a horrid ending. Here’s a complete recap of the episode.

Episode 15 recap

Episode 15 continues from the previous episode, where Hae-in lost her memories due to life-saving surgery, and Eun-sung executed his elaborate scheme to replace Hyun-woo in her life. Hae-in struggles to regain her lost memories while unaware that Eun-sung manipulates her perception of reality. Just before his arrest, we see Hyun-woo reading the diary that Hae-in left him. However, the diary falls into Eun-sung’s hands during Hyun-woo’s arrest. Having taken Hyun-woo’s place in Hae-in’s life, Eun-sung goes to extreme lengths to maintain his deceit, including burning Hae-in’s diary. Thankfully, the diary is saved by the first snowfall.

Upon their return to Korea, Eun-sung persists in his deception, going as far as warning his mother, whom he finds out was responsible for the attack on Hae-in’s life in Germany. Despite his efforts, Hae-in begins to sense a deeper connection to Hyun-woo. The MP3 player triggers a resurgence of memories, and when she visits Hyun-woo in prison, a noticeable change occurs. Then comes Hyun-woo’s trial, which was orchestrated by Eun-sung to ensure his imprisonment.

However, as the trial progresses, it becomes glaring that the evidence against Hyun-woo is flimsy, undermining Eun-sung’s scheme. Moreover, Eun-sung’s mother has orchestrated a vote to dismiss him from Queens Group, and his involvement in investment fraud has come back to haunt him. Just before Hae-in lost her memories, she had arranged an impromptu wedding ceremony with Hyun-woo at an aquarium. They coincidentally meet there again, where Hyun-woo emphasizes once more not to trust anything Eun-sung says.

A dark cliffhanger

Soon after, Hae-in starts uncovering evidence that supports Hyun-woo’s warnings. She comes across a video from a hidden camera and notices the absence of injury marks on Eun-sung’s hand, further solidifying her doubts about Eun-sung’s honesty. Hae-in then receives a parcel from Germany that contains her diary, triggering a flood of memories. Just as Hae-in reunites emotionally with Hyun-woo, Eun-sung’s desperation peaks. He orchestrates a kidnapping of Hae-in and as Hyun-woo tries to get to her, he is knocked down by a car.

Kim Kardashian booed: her roast of Tom Brady, explained https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/kim-kardashian-booed-her-roast-of-tom-brady-explained/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/kim-kardashian-booed-her-roast-of-tom-brady-explained/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 22:53:03 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691647 The reality TV star was met with a mixed reaction at the star-studded comedy event. ]]>

Perhaps no other public figure causes as divisive a reaction as Kim Kardashian, with some believing her to be a mastermind business mogul and others criticising her as a tactless and fame-hungry capitalist.

Though she sometimes enjoys bouts of good publicity, the reality television star has caught the ire of many of late, having been the subject of a recent Taylor Swift song, “thanK u aIMee”, that featured on the singer’s new album The Tortured Poets Department.

Swift isn’t the only one to be on the Kardashian hate train. In news that was perhaps to be expected, Kardashian was met with a less than favourable audience reaction at a recent live event for Netflix.

She attended the streamer’s Tom Brady-centred comedy roast, subtitled  The Greatest Roast of All Time, and was greeted with loud boos from the audience during her toast segment.

Kim Kardashian booed at Tom Brady comedy roast

Kim Kardashian was one of multiple personalities to take to the stage at Netflix’s roast of Tom Brady. Appearing as part of a toast segment, Kardashian graced the stage with a champagne in hand, and was at first met with cheers and applause. It wasn’t long, however, before loud boos began gathering throughout the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, to which Kardashian replied with a seemingly angered “all right, all right, all right.”

Off camera, comedian Kevin Hart — who introduced Kardashian and was one of the roasters of the event — could be heard responding to the boos with “woah, woah.” Taking it in her stride, Kardashian promptly moved on with her set, launching into a range of jokes aimed not just at Brady, but herself and her step-father, Caitlyn Jenner. Maybe it’s that the expectations were low, or that she actually has comedy chops, but most of Kardashian’s jokes landed quite well with the audience.

Among other quips, Kardashian referenced how Brady looked too similar to Jenner for her to consider dating him, and said that if rumours of their relationship were true, she would’ve already released a sex tape. She was self-referential towards the end of the set, too, mentioning O.J. Simpson when saying that, while she feels bad for Brady, her family has already defended enough former football players.

Kardashian herself was the butt of others’ jokes, too. When taking to the stage himself, Brady said the reason the reality star was scared to attend the event was not because she would be roasted, but because her children would be alone at home with their father, Kanye West. Hart, Nikki Glaser, and Jeff Ross were among the comedians to participate in the roast alongside Kardashian, while athletes like Drew Bledsoe and Peyton Manning also appeared at the event.

In 2021, Kardashian showed off her comedy chops again as the host of a divisive episode of Saturday Night Live, which likewise garnered some loud detractors.

Does ‘Bridgerton’ star Luke Thompson have a girlfriend in real life? https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/does-bridgerton-star-luke-thompson-have-a-girlfriend-in-real-life/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/does-bridgerton-star-luke-thompson-have-a-girlfriend-in-real-life/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 19:21:50 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691496 Is there a showmance going on?]]>

Shondaland and the Bridgerton casting team knew what they were doing when they gave us the Bridgerton men.

Anthony, Benedict, and Colin only seem to get better with every passing season and it’s all the internet can do not to lose their minds over them. Johnathan Bailey’s popularity hightened graced our screen with his own season and the same seems to be at play for Luke Newton and the upcoming third season.

But, Luke Thompson seems to generating just as much traction with fans despite his character Benedict never having a season of his own.

The artsy, bohemian brother has captured the hearts of viewers, and actor Luke Thompson is reeping all of the benefits. Of course, with the TikTok edits and adoring fans comes the public’s need to know everything about his personal life, especially if any of us has a chance with him.

Thompson keeps a relatively low profile. His social media seems mostly dedicated to work, posting often about Bridgerton and other projects that he’s a part of.

But online super-sleuths on Reddit think he might be linked to his Bridgerton co-star Harriet Cains.

Cains plays Phillipa Featherington on Bridgerton, one of Penelope AKA Lady Whistledown’s older sisters. According to US Magazine , the pair sparked dating rumors in early 2024. They recently stepped out onto the BAFTA film awards carpet in January looking extra cozy.

Fans, naturally, had thoughts online and many of theme expressed support for the sweet., but unexpected couple. Although several chimed in in the comments section that the two had been close since the show started and their friendship blossomed into a relationship.

Neither Thompson nor Cains have commented public on their alleged relationship, although neither of them are known to do a lot of press or red carpet appearances. As promo continued to ramps up for the new season, fans may get to see a little extra from Thompson and Cains here and there, although maybe not as a duo. But leave it to fans to masterfully decode any and every gesture, nod, or comment.

Society may surprise you yet, Mr. Bridgerton…

Afterall, if there’s one thing Bridgerton fans love its a little tension on the red carpet. Unfortunatley for die hard Benedict fans, all eyes are on Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton when it comes to romantic tension.

Maybe once Benedict’s season role’s around, we’ll finally get some insight into Thompson’s romantic life. Until then, occasional glimpses of Thompson and Cains on a red carpet here and there will have to do.

Is Donny from ‘Baby Reindeer’ trans? https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/is-donny-from-baby-reindeer-trans/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/is-donny-from-baby-reindeer-trans/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 18:12:41 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691570 The show's protagonist uses a trans dating site in the second episode, but does that mean he himself is trans?]]>

Netflix, the host of Baby Reindeer, has a very shiny show on its hands. And, if you ever saw it, you would even say it’s a masterpiece.

Shoddily-crafted Rudolph references aside, we’re approaching the one-month anniversary of Baby Reindeer‘s reign at the top of Netflix’s television charts, and it’s deserved every single second of it. Indeed, with its superhuman penchant for vulnerability, masterful grasp of tension, and its non-linear exploration of the more twisted side of the human condition, the name “Donny Dunn” will be stuck in the minds of many for the foreseeable future.

Today, some folks are wondering whether Donny — the protagonist of the show and a fictionalized version of Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd — is a trans character or not. Based on the piece of information you were just given about Donny in that previous sentence, that’s about all the info you should need.

Is Donny transgender?

No, Donny is not transgender; he’s a cis man who is based on a real-life cis man. This question may have come out of the fact that Donny is shown to be using a trans dating site in the show’s second episode (where he meets Teri), but any trans person who has subjected themselves to online dating (that’s not a trans-specific issue; online dating simply sucks) can tell you firsthand that plenty of cis people use trans dating sites to seek out trans partners specifically.

So no, Donny is not transgender, but Baby Reindeer nevertheless shows magnificent dexterity in handling Teri (the aforementioned trans woman who Donny ends up dating), who you can read more about here.

Baby Reindeer is available to stream on Netflix.

Who is the real Martha from ‘Baby Reindeer?’ https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/who-is-the-real-martha-from-baby-reindeer/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/who-is-the-real-martha-from-baby-reindeer/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 18:11:47 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1686541 Martha Scott's real name is now known. ]]>

The Netflix series Baby Reindeer took the world by storm when it introduced legions of viewers to the thinly veiled semi-autobiographical tale of Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd) and his stalker, Martha Scott. According to the Daily Record, Martha’s real identity has now been revealed.

While the seven-episode series is terrifying as fiction, Baby Reindeer is based on a true story, which adds new shades of horror to the story. The show’s writer and creator, Richard Gadd, plays a fictionalized version of himself, and the experience Gadd says he had in 2015 when the real Martha Scott (played by Jessica Gunning) started stalking him.

Like any film or television show that claims to be based on a true story, internet sleuths tried to crack the case around who the real-life version of Martha might be shortly after the show premiered. The quest to uncover her identity was heightened by the fact that Baby Reindeer includes news articles referencing her former stalking victims as well as emails received by Dunn that seem directly pulled from Gadd’s real inbox.

All the while Gadd has refused to answer the ultimate question, despite his show’s resounding success: Who is the real-life inspiration for Baby Reindeer’s Martha? Now, according to the Daily Record, the mystery has been solved.

Martha Scott’s real name is Fiona Harvey

via Netflix/YouTube

It wasn’t Richard Gadd who revealed Martha Scott’s real name, but Fiona Harvey herself — i.e., the woman who said she’s the real person the character is based on, and Harvey takes issue with several points in the show compared to what she says really happened.

Harvey told the Daily Record, “I give you my permission to name me because people have to know what is going on.” In Baby Reindeer, the Martha Scott character spends time behind bars both before and after she stalked Gadd’s character, Donny Dunn, but according to Harvey, she never went to jail.

“Gadd needs to prove I went to jail which just didn’t happen. I’ve never been sent to jail. That is blatantly obvious,” Harvey told the outlet. “Police at your door would be the first thing, then you’d be charged, then you would have a trial. Then you’d be fined or something or go to prison. This is all made up and hyperbole. There are no restraining orders, injunctions, or interdicts anywhere. There’s just no way. I’ve not had the police at my door about any of these things.”

But like the fictional Scott, Harvey says she’s a lawyer. She told the Daily Record she planned legal action against Gadd and Netflix. “It’s a load of rubbish,” Harvey said, referring to the show. “I don’t have any money, but I’m a perfectly capable lawyer so I will represent myself.”

Some online sleuths figured it was Fiona Harvey all along

News that Fiona Harvey is the real Martha Scott likely came as no surprise to some online sleuths. Much of the online chatter around Martha’s real identity had already pointed to Harvey when X/Twitter posts from 2014 were uncovered, in which she mentions Gadd by name multiple times, and claims to have appeared at his stand-up comedy sets — as the character of Martha does on the show.

Making the case more convincing, Harvey’s posts have similar spelling errors as those depicted in Martha’s emails on Baby Reindeer. Additionally, many of Harvey’s social media posts mention visiting a pub in Camden — the same location as on Baby Reindeer — while her Facebook bio claims she is a lawyer.

Perhaps the most damning evidence came from a post on X in 2014, in which Harvey wrote that she needs her “curtains hung badly.” This is a direct reference to early episodes in Baby Reindeer, when Donny makes the same joke and kickstarts Martha’s infatuation with him. Another name put forward by internet sleuths in relation to Martha’s identity is Helen Faure, a stalker who was convicted last year for harassing a civil litigation barrister in the U.K.

While Faure’s case feels eerily similar to the one depicted in Baby Reindeer, fans were quick to point out that Faure would have been in prison around the time that the events of the show took place in 2015.

In any case, Gadd himself had refused to name the real-life inspiration for Martha, reiterating the woman’s mental illness and saying the character presents “an emotional truth, not a fact-by-fact profile of someone … We’ve gone to such great lengths to disguise her to the point that I don’t think she would recognize herself.” Gadd did say that given how events played out in real life, he isn’t concerned that Baby Reindeer will elicit a response from the real-life Martha.

Perhaps more pressing than the real-life counterpart of Martha is that of the character Darrien ( Tom Goodman-Hill); however, defamation laws in the UK will prevent him from being publicly named. Either way, Baby Reindeer chatter won’t die down anytime soon, especially now that the real Martha Scott has spoken publicly.

‘Baby Reindeer’ might be one of the best things Stephen King has ever seen, but we need to talk about its dark side https://wegotthiscovered.com/netflix/baby-reindeer-might-be-one-of-the-best-things-stephen-king-has-ever-seen-but-we-need-to-talk-about-its-dark-side/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/netflix/baby-reindeer-might-be-one-of-the-best-things-stephen-king-has-ever-seen-but-we-need-to-talk-about-its-dark-side/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 17:42:48 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691449 The #1 Netflix hit hasn't only affected the people watching it.]]>

Baby Reindeer ⏤ you know it, you probably love it (Stephen King did), it’s probably made your skin crawl, it’s probably elicited a few laughs out of you that you weren’t expecting, it probably made you cry a whole awful lot, and you probably can’t get it out of your head.

In other words, to say that Richard Gadd hasn’t made something profoundly special (and, indeed, important) here would be insincerity of the highest order. But that gong has been sounded aplenty. It’s instead high time we took a closer look at the multi-pronged elephant in the room that has taken root ever since Baby Reindeer shot to the top of the Netflix charts. Indeed, it’s time we turn our attention to those who have made it their mission to identify the real-life Martha and Darrien, often to the detriment of innocent people who now have to contend with death threats and harassment.

How at fault is Baby Reindeer for the false accusations it’s inspired?

Let’s get one thing straight: making a piece of autofiction and including characters based on both your stalker and your rapist and expecting the internet not to do their best Sherlock Holmes impression afterward is severely naive. That’s not to say that Gadd and company were working under any such illusion, but the fact that such a reaction didn’t seem to be anticipated is, admittedly, something of an oversight on the part of team Baby Reindeer (even if Gadd has since come forward to tell everyone to stop).

More importantly, though, I want to challenge the idea that the existence of Baby Reindeer is to blame for this influx of false accusations. It’s true that Gadd could have addressed this phenomenon in a more timely manner, and it’s also true that “Baby Reindeer didn’t directly endorse this, so it isn’t Baby Reindeer‘s fault,” is hardly a helpful statement. It must be said, however, that the moment we turn the accountability mirror towards Baby Reindeer itself, we’ve relieved the internet sleuths of precisely that same accountability, which is both a dangerous and insulting precedent for everyone involved.

The Baby Reindeer situation, then, is a fantastic opportunity to open up conversations and dialogues surrounding healthy media consumption and how social media has mutated our obsession with drama and gossip by effectively giving us the tools to get directly involved with it ourselves (or, at the very least, get some impression of involvement).

With Baby Reindeer specifically, this is a very grounded, very intense show that had many viewers reacting strongly to it; it’s subsequently no surprise that — presumably in lieu of any palpable sense of self or fulfillment — those strong feelings about Baby Reindeer became the primary thing in their lives that those viewers could attach to. Toss in the fact that it’s based on a true story (i.e. real people, i.e. people who have harmed or otherwise abused Gadd, who many such viewers now feel a connection with) and these viewers now have the opportunity to give those feelings a more palpable purpose by putting that energy towards tracking down those who have hurt Gadd. Moreover, the fact that Martha and Darrien are varying sorts of abusers allow these viewers to easily paint them — and therefore the people these viewers accuse — as bad people, which in turn distracts from what can only be their own failings in life (emotional and otherwise). Make no mistake; the Baby Reindeer situation is, perhaps appropriately enough, a mental health issue in every way that matters.

It could, of course, be said that the real-life Darrien at least deserves to be put on full public blast (per Deadline, Gadd has reportedly been quite open about the real-life Darrien’s identity to those in the British entertainment circuit), and there’s certainly truth to that statement. But, as we’ve witnessed, taking such matters into one’s own hands has resulted in a myriad of death threats (among other such disturbances) against innocent people, and no one should be okay with doing such a thing.

Going off of that, one might say that, given Gadd’s pleas to the public to stop their investigations, he himself has a responsibility to let the public know who Darrien really is. It’s an understandable sentiment; no one would want someone who abuses his power and influence in such ways to continue to be able to do so, and he should absolutely face justice for his crimes. But, to put that specific responsibility on Gadd’s shoulders isn’t the right call either. His assault was his experience, and no one has any business telling him how he should be navigating it (which, for all we know, has included reports to the police). All we know is that it happened to him, and one of the ways he chose to navigate the aftermath was to make Baby Reindeer, a show that’s quite literally about navigating some of life’s most complicated interpersonal dangers, how we end up hurting people after we ourselves have been hurt, and facing it all with a rugged blend of compassion, humility, honesty, and self-preservation.

Baby Reindeer is a challenging show in all the right ways, and to blame it for the less-savory actions that people have taken in light of its subject matter downplays the importance of said subject matter while freeing the real perpetrators of personal responsibility. If one Mr. Donny Dunn has taught us anything, it’s that personal responsibility is one of the first steps one must take on the road to healing.

Why was Kim Kardashian relentlessly booed at the Tom Brady roast? https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/why-was-kim-kardashian-relentlessly-booed-at-the-tom-brady-roast/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/why-was-kim-kardashian-relentlessly-booed-at-the-tom-brady-roast/#respond Mon, 06 May 2024 16:51:34 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1691452 Kim Kardashian got a lot of boos from the crowd when she hit the stage at last night’s Tom Brady roast.]]>

Netflix debuted their soon to be string of live comedy roasts last night, and what better way than to kick it off with what was billed as “The Greatest Roast of All Time” as comedians, celebrities, and ex-NFL stars all roasted the G.O.A.T., Mr. Tom Brady.

The live stream of the event was from Los Angeles’ famous Kia Forum. It got off without a hitch and was chock full of raunchy, uncensored humor that even had Tom Brady intervene early on, as Jeff Ross made a joke directed at Patriots owner Robert Kraft about massages. Kraft was sitting in the front row, stage left.

By the midway point in the show, Kim Kardashian had a turn at roasting Brady. The television personality and entrepreneur walked up the stage with a champagne glass in hand and received some boos from the audience in the stands. She scoffed at the jeers before she began her portion of the roast. Some of the talent on stage fired back at the crowd. “Really, y’all?” Jeff Ross yelled off stage to the audience.

The boos sounded like they were coming from your general audience members who just wanted to take aim at Kardashian, whose monologue was actually quite funny. She touched on the dating rumors that circled around her and Tom Brady and nodded to her sex tape from years ago. She joked about her stepparent, Caitlyn Jenner, and broke down all the comparisons between how Brady and Jenner actually have a lot in common.

There’s a chance die hard Tom Brady fans were aiming the boos at Kim K. due to those dating rumors about her and Brady. The pair reportedly flirted at a party last summer, but nothing else was mentioned publicly past that. The last thing Brady fans want is a woman like Kim Kardashian in his life, post-Giselle Bundchen. Brady fans want their G.O.A.T. focused and unbothered by the opposite sex.

Kim Kardashian can handle what you throw at her, though. She’s been under public scrutiny for nearly two decades now, and she was also married to Kanye West. A third of an arena booing her is just another Sunday evening for her. Boos from fans who took the cheapest cross-country flight possible from Boston to L.A. will just trickle down her back.

All this being said, Kardashian was one of the highlights of the night, full of humor, surprising appearances, and Tom Brady having to sit there for three hours and get a worse lashing than what the New York Giants defense did to him back in Super Bowl 42.
